Job Description:
The Forest School at The Yale School of the Environment (YSE)
invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in Forest Carbon.
The successful candidate will assess forest carbon dynamics as they
relate to natural disturbance and forest products, with a focus on
southern New England. The candidate will work under the mentorship
of faculty at The Forest School within YSE, and data from the Yale
Forests and Great Mountain Forest will be available. Professors
Mark Bradford and Yuan Yao will jointly serve as the primary
supervisors, and other faculty at The Forest School will serve as
collaborators.
The forests of southern New England have received significant
attention in recent years for their potential as nature-based
climate solutions. However, the carbon dynamics of these forests
are highly complex and influenced by past land use, stand dynamics,
invasive species, changing climate, and carbon tradeoffs related to
forest products. Political debate has often simplified to two
alternatives: active management and no management, yet the reality
is far more complex. The person in this position will investigate
the risks and longevity of carbon stored in forests and forest
products in the region in the context of changing forests.
Results of this project will include peer-reviewed publication(s)
and policy briefs related to carbon stability in southern New
England's forests as it relates to disturbance, stand dynamics, and
management. The successful candidate will also investigate the
carbon tradeoffs of local forest products and lead the development
of best management practices for carbon as a management objective
in southern New England forests, while working with a collaborative
team of faculty and graduate students at The Forest School focused
on forest carbon. We expect this research will better our
understanding of the climate mitigation and adaptation of regional
forests.
Support for this postdoctoral position comes from the Joseph Steven
Taylor Fund at YSE. The position is a one-year appointment with the
possibility of two additional years of renewal contingent upon
satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Candidates
who have a Ph.D. degree in forestry or related fields with
peer-reviewed publications related to silviculture and/or forest
carbon and statistical modeling/ life-cycle assessment are highly
encouraged to apply. Yale values diversity among its students,
staff, and faculty and strongly encourages applications from and
nominations of women, persons with disabilities, protected
veterans, and underrepresented minorities. Consideration of
applicants will begin immediately, but applications will be
accepted until July 30, 2021. The start date of the position is
negotiable, with a target of September 1, 2021. Interested
candidates should email a cover letter and their CV, along with a
list of at least three references to Prof. Mark Bradford at
mark.bradford@yale.edu -and Prof. Yuan Yao at y.yao@yale.edu -
