He / she is responsible for directing the administration of a corporate insurance and risk management program to protect Yale -New Haven Health Services Corporation, each of the three hospital Delivery Networks and Northeast Medical Group (together, the System) from loss relating to unexpected or unintended events. Further, this position is responsible for proactively assessing potential risks to property, persons, and financial loss and determining if these risks can be mitigated through implementing new risk management program s, including the use of commercial insurance, self- insurance or other alternative risk financing programs.EEO/AA/Disability/Veteran Responsibilities

  • 1.Implement a strategic insurance and risk management mission and vision for the System; and lead a robust and creative risk management program and function in support of the mission.
    • 1.1Formulate and implement a strategic insurance risk management program for the System that supports the vision, mission and strategic goals of the organization
    • 2.Implement processes to proactively identify and assess potential risks to System property, persons, operations to determine if the risks can be mitigated through changes in System policies and procedures, risk financing programs or a combination of both.
      • 2.1Participates in System committees related to corporate risk management issues
      • 3.Determine and implement the appropriate levels of risk financing (including the purchase the insurance commercial insurance products) to mitigate potential financial risk and loss to the System.
        • 3.1Develops and implements a process for identifying the appropriate coverage limits, deductibles, and self-insurance levels appropriate for the System.
        • 4.Manages the insurance company claims payment /reimbursement process for insured claims.
          • 4.1Works with leadership of the appropriate System departments in the investigation and defense of claims against the System.
          • 5.Directs the administration of processes that support the operation of the System insurance and risk management function.
            • 5.1Selects System insurance brokers, negotiates broker service and compensation agreements and evaluates broker performance.
            • 6.Serve as property and casualty insurance and risk management consultant to the System leadership.
              • 6.1Performs insurance and risk management due diligence evaluation for System merger and acquisition transactions and manages the integration of insurance programs when transactions are closed. QualificationsEDUCATION Bachelor's degree required; masters degree is preferred. EXPERIENCE Ten or more years experience in a risk management leadership role, five years of which must have been in a large hospital, a healthcare system, a large healthcare related organization or as a healthcare risk management consultant. Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPU) or designation is desirable. Development toward one or both is expected. SPECIAL SKILLS Must have advanced working knowledge of insurance, insurance law, contracts, hospital operations, building/mechanical operations and information systems.

                Must have advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of the risk management process, including risk analysis, risk control, risk financing and claims processing; advanced analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills; ability to gain trust, credibility, and respect; an effective relationship-builder; must be articulate and be skilled at presenting and defending ideas; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to negotiate with and influence others; knowledge of analytics, including data collection, analysis and data presentation;

                Must demonstrate advanced end -user skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; knowledge of database functionality and ability to evaluate, define database functionality needs and select risk management database applications when necessary; PHYSICAL DEMAND Primarily sedentary work sitting within typical office setting without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires frequent use of computer and other office equipment requiring mouse and keyboarding skills. Requires frequent ability to move about on foot, walking long distances or moving from one work site to another, including every worksite of the System. Requires normal visual acuity (or corrected to normal vision) to complete visual inspections of work sites. YNHHS Requisition ID67958
