  • This is a hybrid position with the expectation of being onsite 3 or more days a week at one of our five locations Boston, MA, New Haven, CT, Bluebell, PA, Bogarts, GA or South San Francisco, CA.*

Position Summary

The Associate Scientist I is responsible for performing assigned experimental tasks to support the development and optimization of cell line development and cell culture processes for Alexion's therapeutic protein candidates. The Associate Scientist I will work in collaboration with other members of GPD, and with scientific staff in other Research & Development groups as well as Manufacturing, Quality Assurance and Quality Control groups.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Executes experimental studies to generate stable production cell lines for therapeutic protein candidates under supervision (30%)
  • Executes experimental studies to evaluate new cell-based technologies to improve efficiency of cell line generation process (20%)
  • Executes experimental studies to develop, optimize, and characterize upstream processes for therapeutic protein candidates under supervision (20%)
  • Executes experimental studies to support scale up of processes at pilot scale as required for therapeutic proteins (10%)
  • Document study results in notebooks, forms, and technical reports (10%)
  • Coordinate laboratory management including ordering and maintenance (5%)
  • Communicate findings to colleagues within the group through informal presentations (5%)


  • A successful candidate will typically have:
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience working in a relevant laboratory setting
  • Understanding/coursework in the fundamentals of biology, chemistry and chemical engineering
  • Ability and ambition to learn new techniques
  • Good interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
  • Experience with various MS Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
