Job Description Job Description A Surgical Technologist plays a
critical role in the operating room, assisting surgeons and the
surgical team to ensure the safe and effective care of patients
undergoing surgery. This position requires strong attention to
detail, a commitment to patient safety, and a thorough
understanding of surgical procedures and protocols. Key
Competencies & Responsibilities Aseptic Technique and Patient
Safety: Maintain impeccable aseptic technique to prevent
hospital-acquired infections. Perform a thorough surgical scrub and
maintain a sterile field throughout all procedures. Prepare the
operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment, and
supplies are sterilized and ready for use. Properly discard
contaminated and hazardous materials according to hospital policy.
Maintain a working knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments,
supplies, and equipment. Ensure the operating room is stocked and
ready for each case. Surgical Assistance: Assist the operating
surgeon under direct supervision. Prioritize and prepare for
specific operative procedures using appropriate case requisitions.
Respond appropriately to unanticipated or emergency situations that
may arise during surgery, including assisting with patient CPR
during cardiac arrest. Equipment and Inventory Management: Operate
equipment properly, following manufacturer recommendations and OR
protocols. Ensure all equipment is cleaned and maintained for use
by other staff and patients. Report any issues with equipment or
supplies promptly. Procedural Adherence: Adhere to all established
hospital policies, procedures, and directives. Follow quality
assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate
of a surgical technology program accredited by either the
Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
(CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools
(ABHES) . Credentials & Qualifications BLS (Basic Life Support)
certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) . CST
(Certified Surgical Technologist) certification from the National
Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) .
Certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
