Job DescriptionThe Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting in the care and treatment of clients presenting for substance abuse treatment. The Medical Assistant will help the nursing staff process new admissions in triage, acute care or outpatient services. The Medical Assistant acts as an advocate for patients seeking and receiving care at the center, and interprets the needs and concerns of the patients to other staff members. The Medical Assistant at SCRC is responsible for providing care to clients in acute care methadone maintenance treatment program (MMTP). The Medical Assistant works under the supervision of the LPN's, and RN's to ensure nursing components of the organization are appropriately coordinated. The Medical Assistant works collaboratively with the Certified Nursing Assistants. He/she assumes the responsibility of ensuring patient/staff safety through rounding and safety checks. The Medical Assistant will advocate for patients seeking and receiving care and provide support to the general team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assists the nursing staff in the responsibility for day-to-day processing of new admissions in triage in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs patient care utilizing a client-centered approach at all times, educates patients/clients about Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and empanelment, while upholding a therapeutic milieu.
  • Manages patient records using the electronic medical record.
  • Completes patient charting as required in a timely fashion.
  • Accurately and legibly documents vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperatures, O2, saturations and finger sticks. Ensures to sign off with a legible signature.
  • Ensures to use appropriate boundaries and respects client rights at all times when performing treatment.
  • Responsible for preparing patients and rooms for an exam according to specific procedures
  • Performs all other duties as required Requirements:
    • High School Diploma/GED required. Certification as a Nursing Assistant from the State of Connecticut Department of Health is required. Phlebotomy Certification (National Phlebotomy Association or National Healthcare Association) is preferred. Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association required.
    • Experience in behavioral health and/or Addictions/Substance Abuse preferred.
    • Ability to communicate and work with individuals who have health/social problems.
    • Computer skills are required with the ability to learn EPIC and Outlook.
    • Excellent customer services skills and the ability to accept supervision and assigned responsibilities are necessary.
    • Must be able to demonstrate competency in performing all vital signs.
    • Ability to read and write legibly in English and comprehend basic health information is essential.
    • Bilingual experience preferred. Privileging and Credentialing is a vital part to your starting at CSHHC. There will be a checklist of documents you must submit well in advance of your orientation start date. All must be provided and no exceptions will be made.
