Job Description:
Essential Duties
1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative
department of the University and ensure compliance with University
policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support
for educational policies and planning and develops and approves
administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the
University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major
projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal
policies and regulations and educates staff and administration
about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of
the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program
modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with
federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers
an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with
University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings
objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates
contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8.
Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the
functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9.
Directs the development of related automated systems to support the
function; determines office policies and procedures for use of
automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of
vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and
pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.
11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems
that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the
University in discussions and negotiations with various
governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt
employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master's Degree and ten years of professional level leadership
ideally in an academic setting, or the equivalent combination of
experience and education. Experience with internationally focused
programs. Substantial supervisory and financial management
experience.

Position Focus:
Reporting to the Director, the Deputy Director articulates and
executes a strategic vision for the MacMillan Center for
International Affairs, Yale's focal point for international
teaching and research. Directs and manages the academic operations
of the Center, including but not limited to leading a large team of
program directors, and running the Center's undergraduate,
graduate, and fellowship programs, development, engagement, student
affairs and public affairs functions.
Provide senior level guidance to the Director on strategic planning
and implementation for the MacMillan Center. Serve as key strategic
advisor, as part of the two-person senior administrative team
(Deputy Director and Finance Director) reporting to the Director.
Direct and manage the staff of approximately 50 people, including
currently 9 Director-level direct reports, who support MacMillan's
goals and priorities in core academic, programmatic and related
areas. Develop strategies and implement related academic
initiatives for MacMillan, including its seven area studies
councils and 25 plus interdisciplinary programs. Assess
programmatic success and provide guidance on long term strategic
planning, including special projects of institutional importance.
Manage program activities, including fellowship and degree
programs, visiting faculty, scholar and student programs and align
the overall programmatic, operational, and administrative systems
of MacMillan with the policies and procedures of Yale University.
Acts as liaison to granting agencies and to individual donors.
Supports the fundraising efforts of the Director and MacMillan's
faculty-led Councils and Programs, and in conjunction with the
engagement team also works with Development to prepare periodic
stewardship reports. Oversees proposal submission and acquisition
of funds. Work with the Finance Director to ensure responsible
financial management of the center's academic and outreach programs
and to ensure that MacMillan's facilities and space allocation
match its academic and strategic priorities. Oversee and manage
postdoctoral, faculty and visiting scholar appointments, within the
policies and procedures of the university. Direct MacMillan's
communications and public information strategy to promote its
educational mission and to position its overall programs, including
major events, with both internal and external audiences. Oversee
the development of coordinated web, print and personal methods for
enhancing the stature of MacMillan programs, faculty, students and
graduates. Connect the Center's activities to the university's
broader internationalization efforts. Provide expert guidance and
consultation on international education, development and program
management to University and external partners. Represent MacMillan
within Yale and with relevant educational and policy communities,
as needed by MacMillan's Director and faculty leadership. Monitors
internal and federal policy and political developments that may
affect the Center's strategy and activities. Engages US and foreign
governmental bodies, universities, and civil society organizations
to advance the Center's and university's internationalization
efforts.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
PhD or another advanced professional degree and significant
experience with a focus on international and/or global affairs, or
other relevant fields. Yale experience or similar research
university or other high-performance academic settings. Substantial
supervisory and financial management experience. Proficiency in one
or more other languages.
