Process Safety Manager

Position overview

The Process Safety Manager oversees process hazard analysis (PHA) program at the Rensselaer and Springfield sites and contributes to the continuous improvement of the sites process safety program. This includes conducting process safety risk assessments/HAZOP studies; establish compliance with regulatory requirements; and identify hazards and mitigation approaches during the technical transfer and scale up of chemical processes based on knowledge of regulations and industry standards, and manufacturing techniques.

Essential job duties

  • Manage the site Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) schedule, ensuring timeliness with respect to site scheduling
  • Create and/or revise PHA documents for new and existing processes
  • Ensure that appropriate information is available prior to the PHA (e.g. batch records, drawings, process safety data etc.)
  • Lead Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) on new and existing processes using various methodologies such as hazards and operability (HAZOP) or Curia's PSRA process
  • Manage and track PHA action plans ensuring timely implementation
  • Assist in the development of, provide oversight to, and conduct audits of Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)
  • Aid in the development of the sites process safety program as required
  • Provide mentoring and training for site personnel in process safety/risk assessment field as appropriate
  • Participate in the implementation of new products and processes for manufacturability (including tech transfer)
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for pertinent incidents and near misses as required
  • Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices. Protect employees and visitors by maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks and projects to meet timelines.
    Education, experience, certification and licensures Required
    • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline.
    • Minimum 5 years' experience in API pharmaceuticals or chemical process industry
    • Participation in or leading of PHAs
      Knowledge, skills and abilities
      • Familiarity of hazard and risk analysis
      • Ability to facilitate hazard reviews and HAZOPs
      • Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements (OSHA PSM, EPA RMP)
      • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, batch records, and SOPs
      • Ability to read engineering drawings, such as piping and instrumentation diagrams, process flow diagrams and block flow diagrams
      • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
      • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
