Dean for Health Equity Research and the Associate Director of the
Office of Health Equity Research (OHER), the Director of Public
Strategy is principally responsible for planning and executing the
engagement strategy of OHER. The incumbent will develop and
implement an overarching strategy for OHER engagement within Yale
and with the broader community and will work with partners to
implement that strategy.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. As an advisor to the Director/leadership team, leads engagement
on communications and external affairs and counsels effective
response strategies. 2. Cultivates and expands partnerships with
key stakeholders across the different constituencies of interest.
3. Develops new partnerships with stakeholders of interest. 4.
Serves as a liaison to engagement directors across the university.
5. Manages external speaking opportunities; vets external event
requests; works with external stakeholders to build events that
amplify our objectives and best utilize the Director's time and
maximize on the Director's knowledge. 6. Revises and copy edits
documents drafted or generated by others. This includes
correspondence, proposals, articles, emails, and a wide variety of
other written material. 7. With OHER research team, prepares
Director's speeches, talking points and event briefs; develops and
updates key internal and external communications, presentations,
fact sheets and messages utilizing various multi-media formats. 8.
Works with the research team to monitor university events, public
events, media trends, and university calendar to ensure that
necessary communications are envisioned and organized proactively
and appropriately. 9. Other projects as assigned by the
Director.
Other Primary Duties:
1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the
application of resources of an administrative University office
dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and
implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in
nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility.
3. Plans and/or participates in planning activities on a long-term
basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Directs
strategic engagement plan to support the overall strategic goals of
OHER. 5. Develops strong partnership with University and community
stakeholders to understand perspectives, goals, and determine what
is desired/needed in partnered engagement. 6. Provides strategic
advice and analysis of programs, policies, and procedures to senior
leadership team based on feedback received from the community. 7.
Manages ongoing strategies for reaching out to the community
through speaking engagements. 8. Serves as liaison to the
University and YSM Communications Departments and other appropriate
individuals at Yale to ensure timely and accurate communications
materials. Develops and maintains campus partnerships with other
communications colleagues across campus. 9. May perform other
duties as assigned.
1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative
department of the University and ensure compliance with University
policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support
for educational policies and planning and develops and approves
administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the
University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major
projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal
policies and regulations and educates staff and administration
about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of
the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program
modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with
federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers
an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with
University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings
objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates
contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8.
Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the
functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9.
Directs the development of related automated systems to support the
function; determines office policies and procedures for use of
automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of
vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and
pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.
11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems
that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the
University in discussions and negotiations with various
governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt
employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.Required
Education and ExperienceBachelor's Degree in related field. Seven
years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.Required Skill/Ability 1:Demonstrated ability to develop
and articulate public engagement strategy, and to provide ongoing
direction to implement that strategy.
Required Skill/Ability 2:Experience engaging and strong interest in
working with populations of focus.
Required Skill/Ability 3:Strong written and oral communications and
presentation skills, including the ability to deploy tact and
diplomacy in pursuit of results.
Required Skill/Ability 4:Flexible and collaborative
personality.
Required Skill/Ability 5:Adroit with the unexpected and with
meeting deadlines.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:Bachelor's degree and
ten years of experience in public engagement or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Advanced degree in public
policy/communications/social science related field. Experience in
an advanced higher education setting or other research-intensive
organization, including non-profit or government
