Position Summary The role & responsibilities of the Senior Director/ Medicinal Chemistry will combine scientific decision-making and organizational leadership to advance small molecule drug discovery campaigns from hit identification through development candidate.

  • Leads and supervises a group of research scientists / associates
    • Fosters a climate of creativity, but also leads by example by bringing forth ideas to the group. Encourages others, facilitates brainstorming
    • Connects with staff members to motivate and coach and takes responsibility for staff development. Ensures appropriate level of training. Complies with all requirements of the Alexion performance management process. Provides justification for new staff and participates in hiring.
    • Establishes and manages consistent work processes for planning, evaluating progress, problem solving and prioritizing, aimed at timely, high quality scientific deliverables
    • Effectively networks within Research & Development to understand priorities and allocates effort amongst programs that aligns with these priorities
    • Ensures that the team complies with all company and departmental polices around notebook, scientific reports, QA initiatives and safety, as well as any associated mandatory training.
    • Oversees medicinal chemistry efforts in advancing small molecule discovery programs
      • Leads multidisciplinary small molecule drug discovery project teams in a fast-paced, results-driven environment
      • Design, implement and execute medicinal chemistry strategies
      • Plan and execute on resource allocation to achieve project goals
      • Provide strategic, scientific, and managerial leadership in a combination of internal and outsourced medicinal chemistry environment
      • Collaborate effectively with the leadership team and other departments and functions
      • Contribute to the overall scientific strategy and success of ALXN pipelines
      • Participates in BD diligence activities
        • Serves as an in-house expert in small molecule drug discovery and takes lead in the evaluation of in-licensing opportunities
        • Evaluates and make recommendations with respect to external research proposals regrading small molecule discovery/development candidates Qualifications
          • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry 10+ years of drug discovery experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, with a strong track record of scientific innovation and success in delivering clinical candidates
          • Broad background in all aspects of drug discovery, with working knowledge of ADME/PK, target coverage, pharmacology, physicochemical property-driven optimization and computational chemistry
          • A record of success in partnering with and leveraging computational chemistry for structure-based and property-based drug design of clinical candidates
          • Significant experience in leading synthetic chemistry CRO activities
          • A leader with strong organizational, interpersonal, communication and managerial expertise who motivates and inspires others to achieve corporate scientific objectives Education
