The Executive Director for Oncology Pharmacy, provides the vision, leadership and oversight of the medication use process to ensure safety and efficiency spanning the Smilow Cancer Hospital and Network of the YNHHS. The position strategically plans, organizes and directs the full range of oncology clinical, administrative and distributive pharmaceutical services in all Smilow and oncology locations. Further, the Executive Director provides leadership for all oncology pharmacy programs including patient care services for both inpatient and outpatient care, clinical consultative services, investigational research, academic training and business affairs of the oncology pharmacy service line. In addition the Executive Director provides leadership and establishes relationships with Senior Pharmacy Leadership, Senior Smilow leadership, medical and nursing staff and department heads to optimize all aspects of medication management process. The position is responsible for ensuring safe and high quality pharmaceutical care that is consistent with all regulatory agencies including The Joint Commission, Connecticut DPH and DCP, ASCO QOPI and existing state and federal law.

  • 1.--Summary: Overall responsibilities include the leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, patient safety & regulatory compliance for all areas of responsibility. Provide leadership in the development and mentoring of all department management teams and oversight of training and residency programs within the Oncology Pharmacy service line. Strategic vision and leadership to ensure that all medication procurement, storage, inventory, labeling, dispensing, administration and disposal of pharmaceuticals ensures a safe process and per regulatory requirements. Strategic vision and leadership with the development of an integrated and patient centric clinical oncology pharmacy care model. Provides direct oversight of the pharmacy Investigational Drug Service (IDS).
  • 2.--Provide leadership and oversight of quality initiatives to ensure targets are met or exceeded through effective planning, oversight and teaching.
  • 3.--Routinely completes reports for programs and quality initiatives.Ensures that the pharmaceutical care is safe and consistent with existing regulations of The Joint Commission, Connecticut DPH and DCP, and existing state and federal law.
  • 4.--Evaluates all aspects of oncology pharmacy operations with the goal of delivering cost efficient care and to advance the practice of pharmacy to Best Practice
  • 5.--Delegates projects to appropriate mangers regarding operational, clinical and personnel initiatives
  • 6.--Develops and implements staff programs that address continuous quality improvement, competency assessment and other programs as needed
  • 7.--Analyzes reports and metrics to determine corrective action
  • 8.--Manages the financial and business aspects of oncology pharmacy budget. Analyzes monthly expenditures, variances and trends and their impact on departmental budget. Recommends plans and programs to control drug expenditures and enhance revenue.
  • 9.--Develops both operational and capital budgets for oncology related services of YNHHS. Reports on revenue and budgets within oncology pharmacy
  • 10.--Develops both operational and capital budgets for the investigational drug service for YNHHS
  • 11.--Work with Smilow Division Chairs to ensure programs are strategically developed and aligned with medical staff needs.
  • 12.--Supports all educational programs including the PGY2 Oncology residency, PGY2 IDS residency, pharmacy students from local and regional schools of pharmacy, and pharmacy technician training programs. Supports staff in the provision of the Hematology/Oncology college course at the University of St. Joseph.
  • 13.--Oversees planning and implementation of all projects related to oncology technology solutions. Recommends technology changes and/or improvements
  • 14.--Plans, directs and implements oncology organizational strategy.
  • 15.--Develops and facilitates the development of yearly goals, long term goals and objectives
  • 16.--Actively advises YCCI and CTO regarding pharmacy related support of research
  • 17.--Represents YNHHS and the Smilow Cancer Hospital and Network on local, regional and national committees to support institutional visibility and national presence. Examples include ASHP, Vizient, ASCO, NCCN, HOPA and other national organizations. Optimizes network capabilities to incorporate best practices within the organization.
  • 18.--Provide leadership and oversight of the design and operation of the medication use process to ensure safety and efficiency for cancer patients. This includes patient research protocols (Phase I, 2 and 3 clinical trials) including storage requirements.
  • 19.--Encourages best practices within the oncology service line
  • 20.--Provides leadership and oversight of all clinical oncology services including: -Integrated patient centric oncology care model -OCM (Oncology Care Model) -VIA Oncology clinical pathway -Pharmacist managed anticoagulation service -Collaborative practice initiatives -P&T Committee support
  • 21.--Other duties as required Qualifications EDUCATIONBachelor of Science in Pharmacy with Masters Degree or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D) required. Residency preferredEXPERIENCE5+ years of progressively responsible healthcare administration or management experience required Previous experience or affiliation with academic teaching institution preferred Significant Cancer Center experience in a management role preferred Knowledge & understanding of HIPPA, USP, Connecticut Pharmacy Law, provider regulations & Joint Commission Standards, Knowledge & understanding of Human Subjects Research which includes the entire IRB application process, the legal requirements and oversight and auditing/reporting results.LICENSUREConnecticut Pharmacist license or eligible; Board Certification such as BCPS and/or BCOP preferredSPECIAL SKILLSPersonal Characteristics Interpersonal Awareness: The ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate concerns and feels of personnel and to communicate this awareness Attention: Ensuring that information is properly passed on to others who need to be informed. Highly organized with motivational skills.
